They can be opened like an inward opening casement window or tilted from the bottom for safe ventilation. The tilted opening also has the added benefit of increased security as no one can enter through the gap.
Awning windows are hinged on the top and open outward from the bottom, allowing for ventilation and protection from the rain. Often placed higher on walls for privacy or in combination with large fixed windows for a better view.
